Description

The Board of the Dante Society of BC is writing to invite you to a Q&A with an esteemed guest speaker, Professor Daniela Boccassini from the University of British Columbia. In conversation with one of our directors (Dr. Arianna Dagnino), she will explain why the words of a late medieval Italian poet matter more than ever in today’s world.

FROM DOOM TO BLOOM:
DANTE’S TEACHINGS FOR (OUR) TROUBLED TIMES

Answering five basic questions (or more, depending on your willingness to ask), Daniela Boccassini will highlight for us Dante Alighieri's extraordinary poetic and existential achievements. His world-famous Commedia, composed seven hundred years ago in Italy during times of hardship, resonates more than ever today with the ring of truth. Depending on our willingness to listen, Dante's words of wisdom are there to help us see through today's uncertainties, and fearlessly so. His insights are a potent antidote to our growing sense of gloom.

After the Q&A we will share some light refreshments and some conversation to end our evening.

This event is being held in conjunction with the Annual General Meeting of the Dante Society of BC, which you are also welcome to attend. The AGM and the talk by Dr. Boccassini will be held
on Tuesday, 5 December 2017 from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM.

The location is Room B of the Roundhouse Community Centre. Metered parking is generally available on the surrounding streets, and there is an underground parking lot on Davie Street beside the Urban Fare store. The Yaletown-Roundhouse Skytrain station is 100 metres away on Davie Street.

If you wish to attend only Dr. Boccassini’s presentation, please arrive at 7:00 PM. At the meeting you will have a chance to join the Dante Society BC for 2018. The funds that we collect from memberships are used to advance our mission of promoting the language and culture of Italy. The Society is not subsidized by the Italian government and all of our work is by volunteers. Your membership confirms our common enthusiasm for the promotion
of “l’Italianità". Dues are $30 annually. If you will be visiting Italy next year, a Dante membership card gives discounts at famous museums, theatres and events in Italy. Learn more about membership benefits at: www.dantesocietybc.ca

Finally, if you wish to contribute in another way, we are looking for members who would like to participate in a committee to organize and promote our cultural events. If you would like to help, please speak to Arianna Dagnino, one of our directors, at the meeting, or send us an email at info@dantesocietybc.ca

We look forward to seeing you the 5th. Please feel free to bring a friend.

Yours sincerely,
Tom Henry for the Dante Society of BC
