Call for Papers - Leeds International Medieval Congress

CALL FOR PAPERS: LEEDS INTERNATIONAL MEDIEVAL CONGRESS 2011

Marginalia, the online graduate journal of the Medieval Reading Group at the University of Cambridge, is sponsoring a panel on 'Wealth on the Margins' at the Leeds International Medieval Congress, 11th-14th of July 2011.

We invite proposals dealing on the one hand with the role of wealth in placing writers, readers and patrons on the margins of literary works and secular and religious communities, and on the other hand with the wealth of literary voices and influences on the margins of medieval society from 1100 - 1500. In this context we welcome literary, theological, historical and art historical perspectives on the interplay between wealth and marginality in this period.

Topics could include

  • - the role of patrons in influencing the physical and literary shape of texts.
  • - the role of wealth in placing patrons on the margins of religious respectability and the use of patronage as a path to social and religious probity for patrons/ authors.
  • - wealth and poverty as a dividing line between respected and marginalized religious movements.
  • - the cultural and linguistic wealth on the geographical margins of medieval literary centres.
  • - the role of marginalization in galvanizing interest groups (Wycliffites, John Ball, Tyler Wat) to rebellion or activism.

Please send a 300 word abstract for a 15-20 minute paper to leedspanel2011@marginalia.co.uk by September 25th 2010.
