The introduction of the peanut, the sweet potato and maize into China is discussed. to early Chinese records place the introduction of these plants at an earlier date than is commonly held by experts on American plant migration. Discussed are the problem of both land and sea routes and reasons both facilitating and retarding the diffusion of these plants. The aggregate Chinese evidence on the peanut, the sweet potato and maize definitely upholds the orthodox view of the post-Columbian introduction of American plants into East Asia. H. Takacs.
